Leigh Genesis Sonics U16’s girls finally got their first win of the season with a much-deserved win over Unicorn on Saturday.
After throwing away a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 in the reverse fixture earlier on in the season, Sonics were looking to make amends and exact some revenge. After a tight and cagey opening 30 minutes, Maddie Arkwright was sent on up front and just before half-time, opening the scoring for Sonics. 0-1 to Sonics at half-time.
Sonics started the second half brightly and went 0-3 up courtesy of two more goals from Maddie Arkwright to complete her hat-trick. Unicorn pulled a goal back from a set-piece to make it 1-3, before upping the tempo and having more of the ball, without really creating any clear-cut chances to test the Sonics keeper.
After weathering the few minutes of pressure, Ophelia Coe whipped in a dangerous ball from the left for a Unicorn player to bundle into their own net under pressure from a Sonics player- 1-4. Maddie Arkwright was not content with her hat-trick and scored another goal with around ten minutes remaining for her fourth of the game. With 5 minutes to go, Kasey Hill scored her third goal of the season with a lovely half-volley from inside the box to complete the scoring.
The girl’s performances throughout the season have improved, and they have been unlucky not to pick up more points along the way. Saturday’s game was a fantastic team performance, with every single player putting in their best performance of the season so far. The players have now set the standard for the rest of the season.
COYGS!
