Leigh Genesis 1 Mossley 3

Quickfire double sinks Genesis

Despite dominating much of the second half, Leigh Genesis' penultimate home game of the season ended with defeat to Mossley, thanks largely to two quickfire first half goals from the visitors.

After missing Saturday's 3-0 loss at Bamber Bridge, brothers Marvin and Nathan McDonald return to the Leigh side, while Alex Grisedale was restored to the starting line up in the absence of Connor Millington and the suspended Dave Dempsey, with young goalkeeper Andy Farrimond continuing ahead of Phil Priestley.

Neither side failed to retain much possession in something of a ping-pong opening to the game, but the visitors took the lead on twenty three minutes with virtually the first clear cut chance of the encounter when a ball through the Leigh defence found Matty Kay in enough space to pick his spot in the bottom corner of the net and slot the ball past Farrimond.

Kay was again instrumental as the visitors doubled their lead just three minutes later when he delivered a pinpoint cross from a deep position right on to the head of defender Michael Thomas to nod the ball past Farrimond's outstretched right hand.

The two goal deficit sparked Leigh in to a little more life and a ferocious thirty yard free kick from Stuart Rudd stung the hands of Peter Collinge on twenty eight minutes before Collinge did well to palm a Steve Ferrigan effort away for a corner two minutes later.

Mossley's advantage was halved after just twenty eight seconds of the second half when full back David Webb unleashed a cracking strike from just inside the penalty area that gave Collinge no chance and secured the youngster's first ever Leigh goal.

Nathan McDonald saw an effort flash wide of the target four minutes later before later putting the ball over the crossbar when well-placed after some enterprising football in the build up, but the visitors sealed victory with nine minutes left with arguably their first serious attack of the second period when Kay looped a terrific strike over a stranded Farrimond for his second goal of the evening.

Leigh end their home campaign this coming Saturday (23rd April) when Warrington Town make the short trip to Crilly Park for a 3pm kick off before the Evo-Stik League First Division North season draws to a close on Bank Holiday Friday (29th April) with a 3pm kick off away to Clitheroe.
